This is the second The Simpsons collaboration, in 2007 Vans teamed up with the Springfield family in July 2007 when The Simpsons Movie was released. Other famous collaborations have been with Marvel, Iron Maiden, Disney, Star Wars, The Beatles, Kiss and Slayer.
Bart Simpson - one of the biggest skateboarding icons of all time?
When was the first time you ever saw a skateboard? It was probably under Bart's feet in the opening credits of The Simpsons. That image is burned in your brain if you grew up on the show. The ten-year-old yellow cartoon character had a green skateboard, with a red stripe and it was his primary mode of transport. Bart was the cool kid, he was a daredevil, he liked to prank adults and he was funny. We all wanted to be like Bart who has skateboarded for 31 years and 688 episodes to date.
Like Bart Simpson, skateboarding is a deep-rooted part of Van's identity. Since its opening in 1966, Vans has become a staple in the uniform of skaters. Skaters found that dragging their back foot on the pavement kept wearing their shoes out. They liked the Vans' rugged makeup and sticky sole. In 1976, Vans broke out the Era shoe designed by Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta with a padded collar and different colour combinations. In 1977, Vans created the Old Skool shoe - the first skate shoe with leather panels for durability and a "jazz stripe" along the side. One year later, the Sk8-Hi debuted to protect skaters' ankles. It seems like a natural progression that two skateboarding icons unite.
